NEW SEG REFERENCE BOOK AT IMAGE 2026

A new SEG reference book, Seismic Imaging through Complex Near-Surface Conditions for Oil and Gas Exploration (Investigation in Geophysics No. 22), by Dr. Xianhuai Zhu, CEO of Forland Geophysical Services, and Professor George McMechan at the University of Texas at Dallas, received warm reception at IMAGE ’26. The book examines how the routine application of turning-ray tomography in the seismic industry has proven instrumental in deriving accurate and precise near-surface velocity-depth models, especially when faced with challenges such as irregular topography and significant lateral and vertical velocity variations. This technology serves as a cornerstone for advancing seismic imaging, contributing to various applications in both shallow and deeper structural contexts.

Exploration targets are usually deep, but imaging problems often originate in the shallow subsurface.
